Maybe it’s bold to make a statement such as, “The best mountain road in Texas is…” But in all fairness, for actual mountain roads, with properly hazardous decreasing radius switchbacks with steep drops and gorgeous deep valley views, you don’t get anything better than the Chisos Basin Road in Big Bend National Park. Some of our western neighboring states have more of these types of roads, but don’t let anyone tell you Texas has none.
And for the record, don’t laugh under your helmet when you see the bear crossing sign, because we’ve seen bears crossing, a mother bear and three cubs!
The Chisos Basin is actually a mountain basin that is at 5,401 feet above sea level. Even when it’s 100-plus degrees in the desert, you’ll find comfortable temperatures in the basin. There are several lodging options here. Among them, the Stone Cottages are highly recommended. There is also a restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.
