This winding, 80-mile route just east of San Antonio will take you on a pilgrimage from Gonzales to Lockhart, to some of the most mouthwatering barbecue joints in Texas. Kick off your tour in Gonzales—site of the Texas Revolution’s first battle as well as the Gonzales Food Market, a great place to fill up on brisket, sausage, and ribs. Optional: Ride west to the green city of Seguin for more ’Q (and be sure to stop to admire the world’s largest pecan) before winding north toward Kingsbury, where you can check out vintage aircraft and vehicles (including motorcycles) at the Pioneer Flight Museum. In Luling, people love their watermelon and their barbecue. You’ll have to come back in June for the annual Luling Watermelon Thump festival, but you can consume the savory meats of Luling City Market any day. Finish off your ride in Lockhart, which isn’t called “the BBQ Capital of Texas” for nothing. Save this route, because you’ll need more than one trip here to experience all the barbecue that Lockhart has to offer.
