Among all of the roads in all of this big state, the second favorite wildflower road voted by RT readers in our Top 10 BEST IN TEXAS poll is a section of US 290.
What makes this choice particularly interesting is that this bit of road cuts across several geological regions of the state. In the #2 favorite wildflower roads section, US 290 traverses parts of the Llano uplift, the Edwards Plateau, through the Balcones Fault to the edge of the Blackland Prairie. Each of these regions with its different underlying geology and soil composition favors different types of wildflowers. Cool, right?
A notable and nearly mandatory wildflower-season stop is at Wildseed farms, just east of Fredericksburg.
