If you haven’t been to Luckenbach, you need to go. If you have been to Luckenbach, well, then you know why you need to go again. If you’re in Austin, for say, the R.O.T. Rally or SXSW, or ACL Fest, Moto GP etcetera, etcetera, this is a prime day trip that combines nice Hill Country back roads with one of Texas’ best laid back destinations. The biggest drama you might encounter is if one of the local wine tour limos stops by and the loopy tasters wander through town giggling and acting silly.
As shown in the photo, people pass time just sitting on the porch watching people walk, ride, and shuffle by. The stage in the back often has free music on the weekends. And you’re guaranteed to have a close encounter with a chicken or rooster while you’re here.
The roads in all directions are great for rides, so you can’t go wrong heading out. Just watch for deer and the wine tasters and you’ll have a great day.
Eats
There’s food in Luckenbach, but if you have a hankering for a hamburger and a lot of free time, ride up Old No 9 to Alamo Springs Café. Just head to the Old Tunnel Wildlife Management Area bat cave and you’ll find the restaurant. The burgers there are truly superior, but this is a real mom & pop restaurant with a teeny-tiny kitchen and a small but dedicated staff. If you’re going to get ruffled by a long wait for your burger, then don’t go. But if you’re willing to chill out and enjoy the afternoon on their patio you’ll be rewarded.
