On your way to the Country Tavern in Kilgore for the ribs, stop at Stanley’s in Tyler….best brisket anywhere! Ask for Nick!

  2. Karl Hopfer says:

Tried a couple of the places on the list, and just got back from Louie Mueller’s in Taylor. I must admit, Louie Mueller BBQ must be the most OVERRATED BBQ place in the universe. The brisket rub has soooo much black pepper in it as to make it almost inedible. Maybe we caught them on a bad day, but I would not recommend or go back to the place. All my wife and I could taste on the brisket was black pepper strong enough to make our throats burn. Could not taste the meat at all… The smoked turkey was OK because the rub featured less black pepper. Couldn’t try any of the pork because it was all gone by 2:00 when we got there. The dominant feature in the beef sausage again was black pepper. I like to be able to taste the meat and the different spices in the mix in my sausage, and could not with this mess…. Extremely dissapointing after the buildup in the magazine…

One place missing from your list is Green Mequite in Austin off of Lamar and Barton Springs Roads. Close to the lake and river parks, Umlauf Sculpture Garden, and 6th Street for a destination ride and fabulous BBQ. My wife and I haven’t had anything on thier memu that wasn’t tasty and satisfying. I highly recommend Green Mesquite. After the meal the ride up Barton Springs/Bee Cave Road to the 620 past Lake Travis is a nice relaxing cruise.

Shep’s BBQ in Palestine Texas. Been eating there for 30+ years and the quality is always the same, great. Good people, good food.

  4. Dan Campbell says:

Old Country Tavern, just west of Kilgore, on highway 31. Best ribs in TX.

  5. Ray Prewitt says:

Its not considered an unknown, but certainly out of the way. Coopers BBQ in Llano is a personal favorite. Anytime I get out that way I make it a point to stop by there and get the pork chop. Its a “wow” but the brisket and pork ribs are excellent also. Anyway, if you ever get down that way, check it out. You will not be disappointed.

  6. I was surprised I was in this edition. I got a phone call from a friend of mine. I went out and bought 3 magazines. The truck that says MR-BBQ is my truck we are from Bartlett Texas. The picutre that says Hail to the chef is I. I hope you enjoyed my bbq that weekend at 34th Taylor International BBQ Cook Off. I hope to see you there again.

  7. scott spencer says:

All of this talk about BBQ makes me hungry. But it makes me think about two of my favorite places for BBQ. Wright`s BBQ in Mexia, texas and Kirby`s BBQ in Mexia, Texas. If you get a chance please check them out you won’t be disappointed.

  8. Mike McMahan says:

I wanted to let you know that I rode to all of the places listed in the BBQ issue. I had a blast. Thanks for the suggestions and the indigestion. It was not as easy as it looked. As stated in your article, some of the places are open on the weekends only. Some close early due to the fact that they have sold out. Some of the BBQ places that are normally open on certain days were closed due to the holidays. I rode to all of them but did not get to eat at all of them. I even made a couple of extra BBQ Stops stops along the way.

I made 6 separate road trips and rode to 9 BBQ joints. One trip, to Dallas and Tioga required an overnight stay. The rest were one day round trips. I covered about 2,373 miles of Texas.

I think I will be touring to a few salad bars for the next couple of weeks.

  9. Gary Studdard says:

    Cousin’s in Fort Worth
